Accelerated Hiring Program for Police Officers

Chief Heather Fong and Human Resources Director Micki Callahan are pleased to announce the Accelerated Hiring Program for Police Officers. This program will dramatically decrease the time required to start your new career with the premiere law enforcement agency in the most beautiful city in the world!

The next written test session is scheduled for
Wednesday, August 06, 2008 at 8:00 AM at the following test center:

Conference Center at St. Mary's Cathedral
1111 Gough Street
San Francisco, CA

For additional testing dates, please see the schedule here.
Highlights of the Accelerated Hiring Program:
  • You will not be required to submit an application before you take the test!
  • SFPD will conduct tests on a monthly basis. You simply attend the session which is most convenient for you. You can find the list of upcoming tests here.
  • At the site, you will complete a short job application, take the POST written examination, and complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ).
  • For a sample of the post exam, click here
  • The POST test will be waived for those who have taken it within the last two years and have achieved a score of 42 or higher. However, you will still need to complete an application and attend a PHQ session. Bring a copy of documentation which includes the date you completed the POST test and your score.
  • Also, if you have a current California POST Basic, Intermediate or Advanced Certificate the written test will be waived. Bring a copy of the certificate to the test site. You will still need to complete an application and attend a PHQ session.
  • If you pass the POST written examination, your name will be placed on the official Civil Service tentative eligible list. Your eligibility is valid for two years.
  • SFPD will evaluate the results of the PHQ and invite the most suitable candidates to participate in the physical ability and departmental interviews.
  • If you are invited to the physical ability and departmental interview, but cannot attend, you will not be eliminated from consideration. Like the written test, the physical ability and departmental interviews will be held every month. This means you will be given the opportunity to attend a later session.
  • If you have problems passing the physical ability, you won't be eliminated. You can increase your physical conditioning, come back, and try again. We want you to be successful in the process.
Checklist for Starting the Application Process
  • Report by 8:00 AM to the testing center.
  • You will be required to show a valid driver license.
  • If you have a current POST Certificate, or have passed the written exam in the last two years, bring a copy with you in order to waive the written exam.
  • If you wish to claim Veterans Preference, bring a copy of your DD214 form with you.
  • Allow two to four hours to complete the required paper work.

Applicants will be processed on a first come first serve basis. In the event a test session is full, we will provide you with other opportunities.
