The San Francisco Police Department started in 1849 from a small group of officers, appointed by the first elected Major and Judge, John Geary. Thru the turmoil of the 1906 earthquake, Prohibition in the 20s and 30s, the surge in growth after World War II, unrest of the 60s and 70s, and social progression of the 80s and 90s, the SFPD has evolved to meet the growing and changing needs of the communities it serves.
Today, the SFPD's compliment of over 2000 officers are among the best trained in the country. The current department is one that is exceptionally well-equipped and seeks out the latest crime-fighting technology. But it is community policing - and the ongoing working relationship between officers and the communities they serve that makes policing work.
